What is an educational evaluation?

An educational evaluation is a structured, evidence-based process that helps uncover more information about how a student learns and/or behaves. Using specialized standardized diagnostic assessments and tools usually unavailable at school, we measure various aspects of your child's learning. When your child's test results are compared to norms, they can uncover cognitive strengths and challenges, patterns in behavior and emotions, and possible neurological differences. The goal of completing the assessments is to support individualized education planning, inform intervention strategies, and enhance student learning and success. At Tokyo Learning Lab, we provide families with a clear, data-driven roadmap to help their children thrive academically. By using the same gold-standard assessment tools as clinical psychologists (including the WIAT-4, KBIT-2, and BASC) we uncover the specific cognitive and academic patterns that impact a student's success. While we focus on educational strategy rather than medical diagnosis (which is the domain of doctors and licensed psychologists), our comprehensive reports offer the same insights into how your child learns. We believe this educational-first approach is not only more accessible for students but provides parents with immediate, actionable strategies at a fraction of the cost of a clinical evaluation. To see the similarities and differences between a psycho-educational evaluation from a clinic psychologist and an educational evaluation at Tokyo Learning Lab, see the section, Why should parents choose Tokyo Learning Lab for an educational evaluation?

What are the benefits of completing an educational evaluation?

Objective Clarity: Standardized assessment data provides detailed information on your child's learning profile and processes. Instead of just thinking, "my child is struggling with reading," you can see which specific parts of the reading process are challenging, how your child compares to other children his/her age, and what steps you can take to help your child improve. Instead of, "my child's teacher often says he has trouble focusing," you can see how your child rates in areas such as Hyperactivity, Anxiety, Attention Problems, and Adaptability, whether those rating are in the normal, at-risk, or significant range, and if they should be followed up with a doctor.Targeted Support: When seeking academic support or general tutoring, instead of just asking for reading or math support, you'll know exactly which areas to target to help ensure your child makes the right progress.Advocacy and Empowerment: With objective, detailed data, you are empowered with the information to find the right support for your child.

Does my child need an educational evaluation?

You may want to seek an educational assessment at Tokyo Learning Lab in one or more of the following cases:

  1. Your child is struggling to master skills like reading fluently, spelling accurately, solving math problems, despite effort.

  2. They frequently become frustrated with or avoid schoolwork.

  3. There is a large gap between the effort they express and the outcome (working very hard, but still academically behind).

  4. They have difficulty sustaining attention, following directions, or following through with things.

  5. They have difficulty organizing their materials and managing their time.

  6. Their teachers have given consistent feedback relating to learning challenges at school.

  7. The information or feedback you receive from school feels incomplete and you would like a more objective, standardized measure of your child's learning.

When parents want to know more about their child's learning, the process of an educational assessment will provide them with valuable, detailed data that shows the student's learning strengths and challenges in a way that school grades or classroom data cannot. After completing an educational assessment, the data you receive will show how your child's performance compares to other children his/her age to clearly indicate what your child's strengths and challenges are.

What is the process for an educational evaluation?

  1. Initial Consultation & Screening - Parents take part in an interview so we can understand your concerns and goals. Parents decide on which assessments they would like to pursue.

  2. Holistic data collection – We gather a 360-degree view of the student by collecting standardized insights from parents and teachers (if necessary) to ensure the evaluation reflects the child's performance across all environments.

  3. Testing - The child will complete the necessary assessments to learn about about their academic, cognitive, language, and other abilities (depending on the assessment). These assessments are completed in-person, and generally take 1 to 4 hours. We provide a stress-free environment that is easy on children.

  4. Feedback and report - You will meet with us to review the assessment data and report and receive guidance about next steps.

Can you diagnose my child's learning disability, ADHD, or ASD?

At Tokyo Learning Lab, we do not diagnose learning disabilities, ADHD, or ASD. If you do not require a diagnosis, but want actionable data about your child's learning, we believe we offer an excellent alternative. If you are trying to decide between an educational evaluation at Tokyo Learning Lab and a full psycho-educational evaluation with a clinical psychologist, we encourage you to review the information in the section, Why should you choose Tokyo Learning Lab for your evaluation?
